The Environmental Justice Task Force (EJTF) was greatly active for much of 2021 and 2022. While the task force worked largely on the establishment of a Sustainability Commission in the City of Green Bay in recent years, we focused on rallying the community together in an effort to protect our water. We held a rally in opposition of the oil pipelines, and circulated a petition for Green Bay City Council to pass a resolution in support of clean water and treaty rights. Although this did not pass, the group persevered.
Participating in the March Forth to Earth Day beginning on March 4th for eight weeks until Earth Day, rallies were held in cities across Wisconsin to demand a more sustainable and equitable future. Several of our JOSHUA task force members participated. The task force also led a community clean up and held the annual electronic recycling event.
A recent issue the group chose to work on was a project related to the coal piles in downtown Green Bay. Through canvassing training and months of research, the hope was to educate the public on the environmental effects of moving the coal to Green Bay’s fresh water estuary. However, we’ve had to regroup our thoughts and work on something different.
Currently, the EJTF is on a hiatus. Message us if you have interest in being an active member of the environmental task force! Our statewide network, WISDOM, has an active environmental justice group and helps to pioneer the newly formed Rights of Nature movement.
